Don Meredith and Howard Cosell called 185 NFL football games games together on ABC’s landmark Monday Night Football.
Do you have a favorite moment?
My runner-up is “The Kiss.”

“Ich,” Don Meredith said after planting a surprise kiss on broadcast partner Howard Cosell upon Meredith’s return to Monday Night Football.
As I tell it in my new biography — Dandy Don Meredith — The First Dallas Cowboy –– In 1997 Meredith was back on “Monday Night Football.” Cosell reintroduced Meredith to the audience. Meredith said, “I’ve missed you” and planted a big kiss on Cosell’s left cheek.
“I didn’t know you cared,” Cosell said.
“Ich!” Meredith said, wincing.”

But my favorite moment, and you can see it is “The Finger. As I wrote in my new book — Dandy Don Meredith — The First Dallas Cowboy. I wrote:
Likely, the best-remembered moment came during a one-sided Oakland Raiders-Houston Oilers game when director Chet Forte asked his crew to find something interesting, a difficult assigment because most of the fans had left.
One camera operator found a guy in the end zone. Just as Forte ordered a zoom-in, the man looked straight in the camera and flashed the middle finger to America.
Cosell was uncharacteristically speechless.
Meredith chimed in: “How about that, Howard? He’s telling us he’s number one in the nation.”

He’s pointing at America on live TV.
These are just two stories from my book Dandy Don Meredith — The First Dallas Cowboy. I’ll be at the Lakewood Library in Dallas at 6:30 pm on Oct. 17, 2024 sharing fun stories about Dandy Don and early days of the Cowboys.
